Psyllium Husk 200g from Organic Superfoods is a regulator of intestinal transit, acting as a normalizer of the consistency of excrement. Both the WHO (World Health Organization), ESCOP (European Scientific Commission for Phytotherapy) and EMEA recommend psyllium to relieve constipation and facilitate bowel movements.

The name psyllium, derived from the Greek “psyllia” means “flea”, alluding to the tiny size of the seed. The mature, whole and dried seed is known to be beneficial both for constipation, registered in the European Pharmacopoeia as a “laxative or mucilaginous ballast”. And for diarrhea, for which it is also very effective.

Thanks to the exceptional level of mucilage (cellulose and hemicellulose) contained in the seed, psyllium proves to be a formidable ally against constipation. In this case, the psyllium seeds will absorb a large volume of water and swell to form a gel, allowing peristalsis (motility) to be stimulated, the reflex contraction of the intestinal walls. Gastrointestinal transit time decreases and stool weight increases.

Psyllium is also beneficial in case of diarrhea, the gel formed by the seed will increase the water retention capacity and delay gastric emptying: stools will be less liquid and less frequent.

Psyllium Husk 200g Benefits:

  • Helps against hemorrhoids or anal fistulas, by facilitating fecal evacuation, and reducing bleeding and associated pain.
  • It helps against irritable bowel syndrome, a digestive disorder whose causes are still poorly understood (hormones, infection…) and affects around 10 to 20% of the population in Western countries (mostly women).
  • Helps against ulcerative colitis: maintaining its remission by fermenting in the colon. It is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect (by inhibiting the production of cytokines).
  • Helps against hypercholesterolemia: psyllium, combined with good hygiene and dietary measures, can reduce the rate of bad cholesterol (LDL). In 1999, a study of 34 men showed that taking 5.1g per day of psyllium reduced LDL cholesterol by 13%. Another study concluded that the pharmacological treatment of cholesterol (simvastatin) was enhanced by the consumption of 5.1g of psyllium per day.
  • Helps against diabetes: taking psyllium decreases glucose absorption and helps reduce blood sugar levels. For optimal action, it is more interesting to take psyllium during food, in fact, when you mix it with water and food, the psyllium swells and the sugar is trapped: this way it will be absorbed more slowly.

Transit effects appear 12 to 24 hours after the first dose, but sometimes it is necessary to continue treatment for 2 or 3 days before effects are observed.

It is important to drink approximately 30 ml of liquid for each gram of seed.
