The Mezquite or Pechita (Propolis Juliflora), is a tree that produces a pod-shaped fruit. From Sonora, Mexico. It is a very versatile tree from which everything is used: from the trunk to its fruits. Discover the healthy properties of mesquite in this article.
Healthy properties of mesquite
Mesquite is one of the oldest trees and is characteristic of the desert areas of Mexico. Because it is a very resistant plant and can withstand harsh climates, it also grows in areas such as Hidalgo, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes, although it is actually present in more than 60% of the national territory.
Until recently, it was not so common to find products derived from mesquite, since its branches, leaves and seeds (pods) were used rather to feed livestock and make firewood, since its wood is very aromatic. However, among the qualities of mesquite, already better known today, is the possibility of producing flour with its seeds, which opens up a world of new possibilities and versatile uses in the kitchen.
And today I am going to talk to you about its pod-shaped fruit, also known as the white carob tree of South America.
The latest studies reveal that this fruit provides innumerable health benefits, since it is a source of polysaccharides with high added value, and is also very easy to incorporate into our kitchen. Its flavor is sweet and reminiscent of walnut and cinnamon.
Here is the list of its benefits:
- It provides alkaline minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc, iron and copper, which makes it ideal to include in alkaline diets or keto diets where it is important to keep glucose at bay.
- That said, it has a very low glycemic index and therefore, a low impact on glucose, being suitable for diabetics and people who follow an alkaline-keto diet. Avoid insulin spikes.
- It is very rich in proteins and amino acids such as Lysine.
- It contains insoluble fiber that promotes a good environment (prebiotic) for the intestinal micro flora.
- Helps cleanse and relieve stomach pain, preventing colon diseases.
- Mesquite flour does not contain gluten, therefore, making it more than suitable to include in diets where gluten cannot be taken.
- And finally, thanks to its composition, it is a good ally when it comes to fighting fungal infections.
How can we take it?
Since it has a very pleasant sweet flavor, it can be used as a natural sweetener in smoothies and shakes.
Mesquite can be added to soups, stews and sauces.
Mesquite flour can also be used as if it were traditional flour (replacing flours such as wheat and others that contain gluten) to make cakes, biscuits, cookies, breads and pancakes. You can’t miss our latest recipe on our blog, anti-inflammatory pancakes made with mesquite.
