When is the best time to do a liver detox

In previous articles, we’ve been talking about the importance of the liver, the body’s great laboratory. We explored how to detect if a detox is necessary and how to carry it out. We also explained the three phases of the liver detox. Today, we talk about when is the best time to do a liver detox.

When is the best time to do a liver detox

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the liver is associated with the wood element, spring, and wind. The liver is one of the major detoxifying organs in our body, working tirelessly to eliminate toxins. According to TCM, spring is the liver’s season, the time of the year when it detoxifies and regenerates itself.

In Ayurveda, both spring and autumn are considered ideal periods to detoxify the liver. These two key moments are recommended because one marks the transition from winter to spring, and the other is the shift from summer to autumn.

Why Detox in Autumn

According to Ayurvedic theory, the seasons are governed by “dosha” activity. We come from summer, an expansive energy period, and by the time autumn arrives, we have accumulated a lot of heat in our tissues during this season. The liver is one of the main organs that accumulates and gets agitated by this heat. Therefore, autumn is the time to recognize the need to slow down, reduce heat, and restore the body and liver.

Beyond the seasons, it is also highly recommended to detoxify the liver after periods of excess: as for example, holiday festivities or after a prolonged pharmacological treatment.

In summary, it is recommended to do a liver detox:

  • With the change of seasons, in spring and/or autumn
  • After a period of excess or overload
  • After undergoing treatment with pharmaceutical products
